Sofia Grace Hernandez and Erika Dickson each swept their three sets, as the Buena Park High girls tennis team defeated La Mirada, 13-5, in a non-league match on Monday at Buena Park High.
Hernandez won her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-3 to give the Coyotes three points. Dickson lost just one game in sweeping 6-0, 6-0, 6-1. Buena Park’s top doubles team also swept all three sets. Suzy Choi and Jocelyn Ortinzano went 7-5, 6-1, 6-3 to add three more points. No. 2 doubles team of Vanesa Navarette and Esmarelda Elizarraraz won two sets. No. 3 single Kate Hernandez and No. 3 doubles team of Audrey Aquino and Cindy Chavez each won a set to add the final two points.
With many of her players still inexperienced at the varsity level, Head Coach Suzan Guba expected a much tighter match against La Mirada. She said the Matadores had an edge in skill, but credited her players with steady play. The Coyotes were able to keep the ball in play long enough for the Matadores to make more mistakes.
The Coyotes finished tied for third in the Freeway League last year. Being able to win two of three pre-league matches is a credit to the players’ effort and attitude, Guba said.
“They have a great time playing the game,” Guba said.
