The Cypress High football team was in a shootout with Western High early, but the Centurions were able to out gun the Pioneers for a 49-21 Empire League win on Thursday at Western High.
Cypress was the home team and the Centurions honored their seniors before the game. During the game, it was sophomore running back Isaac Hurtado had the honor of rushing for 193 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Centurions’ big night.
“He gets stronger as the game goes on,” Cypress Coach Rick Feldman said of Hurtado.
After a back and forth first quarter the Centurions found themselves trailing 14-7, after a big play touchdown pass by the Pioneers to John Ojelabi. However, Cypress wide receiver Dominique Thompson returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to tie the game 14-14.
After the Centurions forced a punt on the Pioneer possession, Hurtado capped a short drive with a 41-yard touchdown run to give the Centurions a lead, 21-14, they would not relinquish.
A late touchdown in the second quarter and a second half opening drive pushed a 21-14 Cypress lead to 35-14 early in the third quarter. The Pioneers continued to battle as they put together a touchdown drive that cut the lead to 35-21, with 6:46 left in the third, but that would be as close as they would get.
“I felt like the kids still believed, we just couldn’t get a stop defensively when we needed one,” Western coach Dan Davidson said of the Pioneer effort.
After the Centurions took their 35-14 lead, the Pioneers put together a 77-yard drive that cut the lead to 35-21. Quarterback Anthony Munoz completed a 19 yard pass to Rahsaan Hester to the 49 yard line. Munoz then connected with John Ojelabi for a 29-yard completion that got the Pioneers down to the Cypress 22 yard line.
After a one yard loss, sophomore Caine Savage got behind the defense and Munoz hit him in stride for a 23-yard touchdown pass. Munoz finished the night with 391 passing yards and two touchdowns. Ojelabi had 121 receiving yards and Savage had 115. Junior tight end James Mendoza caught passes for 89 yards.
Early in the game, the Pioneers had the Centurions on their heels. They took a 7-0 lead when Rahsaan Hester broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run.
