Cypress rolls to 3-0 with win over Santa Ana Valley

The Cypress High football team jumped out to a 28-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and cruised to a 49-21 win over Santa Ana Valley last week at Western High.
Issac Hurtado rushed for two touchdowns, Dominique Thompson had two punt returns for touchdowns and quarterback Alex Ashcraft threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns as the Centurion offense built up a 42-0 lead by halftime.
While the offense and special teams clicked, the Centurion defense didn’t allow Santa Ana Valley beyond midfield in the first half. When the Falcons did get near midfield, the Centurions immediately took back the momentum. On a deep punt, Thompson went left, reversed field and found blockers and some big holes to race for a 91-yard punt return for the touchdown.
“Everything bounced our way in the first half, we got all the breaks and when we had the opportunities, we made plays,” Cypress Coach Rick Feldman said.
At the start of the second half, Feldman was beginning to substitute for his starters, including Ashcraft and Hurtado on offense. Kyle Coon and Christian Gonzalez combined for 73 rushing yards to pace the offense in the second half. Santa Ana Valley was able to cut the lead to 42-14 before Thompson broke another short 39-yard punt return to add the final score for the Centurions.
While the Centurions are pleased to be off to a 3-0 start, Feldman is pushing his team to continue to improve as the road gets tougher.
