Oxford Academy’s girls basketball team improved to 8-0 and won their Flight Championship of the Ocean View Hawk Holiday Classic Tournament last week.
Oxford captured the title with a 55-48 win over El Toro in the finals.
Austyn Masuno led the Patriots with 15 points and 18 rebounds and was voted MVP of the tournament. Angie Choi had 14 points and Sophia Chan had 13 points for the Patriots.
Oxford had won their pool, defeating Warren High, 62-39, on Friday for their third pool play win. Masuno had 19 points and 11 rebounds in that victory. Chan added 15 points and Brianna Rodriguez chipped in 12 points. Warren had won their first two pool play games as well.
In their first two pool play games, the Patriots defeated Cypress and Lakewood. Lakewood presented a key challenge for the Patriots, with good size and athleticism. The Lancers fought back after the Patriots took an early lead. A full court press and ball control helped the Patriots regain the lead.
“I think we were pretty smart today with the ball, offensively,” Clifton said.
Freshman point guard Choi has made a big contribution and is giving the Patriots a more controlled fast break. She adds a new range and versatility to the offense.
“What a Godsend, having a true point,” Clifton said.
Oxford was placed in a strong pool, so their four wins in the Hawk Holiday Classic was a strong measuring stick for a team that was moved up to Division 3A playoff group. Warren, Lakewood and El Toro are all in 3AA Division and Cypress is a 2AA team.
The Patriots will host Kennedy High on Thursday, at 7 p.m. and then prepare for the Marina/EdisonTournament, which begins on Dec. 26. The Patriots are scheduled to open the tournament against Wilson High of Long Beach at 6 p.m. at Edison High School.
