The Los Alamitos High girls soccer team took home two pre-season tournament titles last week, as the Griffins were repeat champions of the Aliso Cup before taking home the Mater Dei Premier Invitational over the weekend.
Los Alamitos defeated Villa Park, 1-0, in the finals of the Mater Dei Invitational on Saturday. Tabitha LaParl scored the winning goal off an assist from Colby Barnett. The Griffins needed a penalty-kick shootout in the semifinals to advance to the finals, after tying Hamilton High of Arizona, 2-2, in regulation. Freshman goalkeeper Reezyn Turk came up with a big save to help the Griffins win the shootout.
LaParl led the Griffins with three goals in the tournament, while Jayden Newkirk and Rylie Raupp each had two. Senior defender Morgan Meza was awarded the team’s Golden Boot for her play in the tournament. The Griffin defense posted shutouts in seven of 10 games during the two-tournament run.
The Griffins won the Aliso Cup championship game, 1-0, over Trabuco Hills on Dec. 11. LaParl scored the game-winning goal off an assist by Alyssa Mendoza in the final. LaParl led the Griffins with six goals in the tournament, while Colby Barnett had four.
The Griffins got into the finals after defeating in a penalty-kick shootout, after a 1-1 tie in regulation. Mendoza had scored the tying goal with less than 2 minutes to play in the game. Goalkeeper Reezyn Turk made a big save in the shootout to help Los Al advance to the Championship game.
